Staycation Security Tips For the Home, Garage and Surrounds

Safe-proofing and securely locking a home and garage’s doors and windows before heading off on holiday is non-negotiable. But how safe are those of us staying home this festive season?

While staying home during the holidays definitely has its pros and cons, Gautengers should be even more alert than usual. The festive season is peak season for thieves who are out to prey on residents relaxed demeanour and the festivities that lay ahead.

Practice extra caution through the following:

  • Fix any broken windows and doors.
  • Ensure that all windows and doors can also lock securely.
  • Before exiting the house for whatever reason, lock up, and ensure that all garden tools and equipment are safely locked away in the garage or tool shed. If you’ll only be returning after dark, switch on crucial lights before you leave.
  • When returning home, only press your garage doors’ remote when it is safe to do so. Close all gates and the garage before exiting the car.
  • Lock security gates even if you are home.
  • Keep the panic button nearby when spending time outside in the yard. Get your children to do the same.
  • Don’t leave any valuables in plain sight or near windows.
  • Don’t ignore your dogs’ barking.
  • If possible train your dogs (or at least one dog) to sleep inside the house at night.
  • Patrol your yard a few times a day to check for anything suspicious.
  • Discuss safety protocol with your family. It is a good idea to single out the safest room in the house as a “panic room”. A place where the family can securely lock themselves in and call for help.
  • Keep an eye out on your neighbours’ properties as well.
  • RightFit is a Gauteng based garage door company that specialises in the installation and repair of wooden, aluminium and aluzinc garage doors.
